Most people don’t make bad decisions when moving to Florida. They make decisions with incomplete information. The biggest mistake I see relocation buyers make is choosing the right suburb around the wrong city ecosystem. They start with a city name instead of a lifestyle. Miami looks exciting on paper, but you’re committing to the far southeast corner of the state with a very real cost structure. Orlando has great suburbs, but no coastline. Jacksonville can be affordable, but you’re almost in Georgia and that lifestyle isn’t for everyone. Naples is beautiful, but many buyers who think they want Naples actually want a more balanced coastal lifestyle that shows up more consistently in places like Venice, Wellen Park, South Sarasota, or select areas around Tampa Bay at a better price point. The second mistake is going too far outside the core just to save money. Florida is a proximity-based state. Ten minutes matters and forty minutes changes your life. The further you push out, the more you trade away beaches, airports, dining, events, healthcare access, and the day-to-day lifestyle you moved here for. Before you ever look at homes, you need to define the ecosystem you want and the radius you’re willing to live within. Once you do that, most of the map eliminates itself and your decisions get easier.
